Admission Requirement:

1.      The minimum CGPA should be 3.0 (Semester System) or First Division (Annual System) in MS/MPhil/equivalent Degree from a recognized University.

2.      A Govt. College/Public Sector University teacher or member of the research staff of a Govt. Research Organization who has shown undoubted promise for research and holds MA/M.Sc. degree may be recommended by the Admission Committee for admission directly to PhD programme. However, the students would have to complete the course work required for MPhil/MS.

3.      No Objection Certificate from the employer is required to be attached with Admission Form and routed through Proper channel in case of in-service candidates.

4.      Students applying for admission are required to submit a copy of synopsis/research work. Admission will be given subject to the availability of the Supervisor in the field of research strictly according to HEC’s requirements.


Subject Test:

1.      Admission to PhD programme will only be given to those students who have achieved a score of at least 60% in the NTS GAT subject test of their respective discipline or should have scored International GRE with 60% percentile.

2.      If the Test is not available in NTS subject list, then University, as per HEC criteria will conduct the Test at par with GRE Subject Test and the qualifying score will be 70%.

3.      Those who seek admission in PhD without having obtained MPhil or its equivalent degree must pass MPhil entry test and interview.  The schedule for MPhil entry test is available at QAU website:

4.      All applicants of PhD Physics are required to appear in the written test scheduled for MPhil Physics in the Department of Physics.



Course Work:

1.      Those admitted shall have to complete/pass 18 credit hour course-work within four semesters as per University rules.

2.      Those admitted in PhD programme and not passed MPhil/MS/equivalent shall have to pass 42 credit hours courses (24+18) within six semesters as per University rules.

3.      Admission to PhD programme is made on a competitive basis. The minimum period for completion of PhD Programme shall be three years whereas maximum period shall be seven years.

How to Apply:  

1.       A candidate seeking admission to PhD programme shall apply on the prescribed form. The Admission Forms alongwith prospectus can be obtained from:

a.       The QAU Campus branches of Habib Bank Ltd and Askari Bank Ltd @ Rs.700/- OR

b.      By sending self-addressed envelope of 8.5x11(inches) to the Assistant Registrar (Admissions) along with a Bank Draft of Rs.800/- in favor of ‘Treasurer, Quaid-i-Azam University’ by 09.01.2012 (name of programme should be written clearly on the envelope) OR

c.       Application Form can be downloaded (Click here), where all relevant instructions are available.

2.       Three copies of the prescribed Admission Form duly filled in and supported by the attested copies of Educational Certificates/Degrees may be submitted directly to the respective Director/Chairperson of Department/ School/ Institute/Centre by 16.01.2012. 

3.       Incomplete and late applications will not be entertained.

4.       Short listed candidates will be called for interview/presentation of research proposals.
